Our first episode tackles the looming question of how the heck do you do photography business while being a mother? The quick answer – there is no perfect solution. What works for us most likely wont be an exact road map to work for you, and that’s OKAY!
We are big believers of working in seasons. Some seasons of your life you need to hustle, some seasons you can rest, but knowing when to put your foot on the gas and when to let up is the hard part.
We have found systems of automation and client management that we do believe are #1 needed for every photographer though.
We love our CRMs (Client relationship management software). Alex uses Honeybook, and Jamie uses Dubsado (affliate links if you want to save some money signing up for either one).
The thing with both of them that they both crush is automations and workflows. We have it set up to automatically start onboarding new clients from the moment they submit our lead form because we don’t want our client experience to suffer while we’re tackling mom life.
When you have a good automation it won’t feel impersonal, it will feel like you’re taking care of business and really care to make every client experience a great one.
We both have very different birth experiences. Alex has had 3 natural births, while Jamie has had 2 c-sections one with complications.
Alex has had harder times being pregnant, which lead to having Jamie take over at one of her weddings to make sure the client experience didn’t suffer.
Jamie had harder birth experiences that lead her to being in a ton of pain and trying to go back to work way too soon (around 6 weeks).
The common part is you can’t plan for how your pregnancy or birth will go, because what you plan for sometimes 10000% something you never saw coming will happen. But that’s okay, you’re already an amazing photographer, learning to pivot is part of it all.
We will always encourage every photographer we mentor to take a look at their life, what boundaries are hard stops for them, and what they wish their workflows looked like. That’s where boundaries can lie that you didn’t know you needed yet.
These boundaries do not make you a mean person either. This is how you achieve that impossible “balance” (it will never be perfect though) and work through what you are willing to do, and what you are not. All of us are different after all, with different clients, and different home lives!
Some hard boundaries we talk about in this episode is how Jamie won’t work around Halloween so she can always take her boys trick-o-treating.
One for Alex is Sundays and Wednesdays for church and family reset time!
Little homework challenge for you, go write down things you love about your life and what things stress you out — you might discover new boundaries you need to put in place.
